Recent accomplishments announced in April 2015
This year’s two most coveted Academic All-Stars recognitions, overall award in General Scholarship, went to our students, Richard Ouyang (MUS) and Roger Li (Collierville). Yunhua Zhao was a weekly winner in the Mathematics category. It is an amazing testimony of our school’s academic excellence! Gov. Bill Haslam was the featured speaker at the awards luncheon, held at the Hilton Memphis on 4/29. The Academic All-Stars program recognizes the “best and brightest” students from the Greater Memphis area in 10 categories. Nominees exemplify a high standard of leadership, community service, and academic excellence.
We have the largest graduating senior class in our school history. This is certainly the strongest class in recent years. Our students were accepted to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, CalTech, Duke, Penn State (BS/MD program), Vanderbilt, UC Berkeley, and many other top colleges. Many of our students have received merit based scholarships. As they are making final decisions on colleges, I am confident that they will excel in colleges the same way as how they have been performing at our school.
Congratulations to Richard Ouyang (MUS), Roger Li (Collierville) and Kelly Yuan (White Station) for making to the US Presidential Scholars semifinalist list. It is amazing that almost 30% of all Tennessee semifinalists are from our school.
Recent accomplishments announced in February 2015
Richard Ouyang has been named a semifinalists in the 2015 International Physics Olympiad Competition. He is one of only three semifinalists from Tennessee. His score on the F=ma physics exam, taken in January, qualifies him for the USA Physics Olympiad Exam, administered in mid-March. This is the second year in a row that we have students made to the semifinalist list.
U.S. Presidential Scholars Program just announced 2015 candidates. To be eligible, a student must score exceptionally well on either the SAT of the ACT. We have the following students from our school received such honor. Great job!
Austin Erwin (CHS)
Roger Li (CHS)
Richard Ouyang (MUS)
Yunhua Zhao (MUS)
Xiaohan Xue (WSHS)
Kelley Yuan (WSHS)

Yunhua Zhao was recognized last Sunday as an Academic All-Stars in the Mathematics category by The Commercial Appeal (http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/yunhua-zhao-memphis-university-school). He is our 3rd student this year receiving this award. Congratulations Yunhua! Over the years we have built an environment where aspiring students have opportunities to work together and collectively raise the bar of academic excellence. They have also learned to be well-rounded. It is not surprising to me that our students excel in various local competitions, including last week’s Latin contest and the Knowledge Bowl competition.
We have received more details of our students’ accomplishments in the Pro2Serve Math Contest at UT Knoxville, where 800 of the best math students in the state competed for individual and team awards. Jason Liang, Richard Ouyang, Yunhua Zhao, Stanley Xiang, Joey He and Roger Li from our school made to the Top 60 of FERMAT I that qualified them for the FERMAT II individual contest. At the end of the day, Yunhua Zhao, Richard Ouyang and Jason Liang were among the top scorers of each contest. They had also won these contests in previous years. In the three-person Math Bowl team competition, Richard Ouyang led the MUS team swept the entire 64-team field without losing a single match and won the overall 1st place team. Yunhua Zhao also did well leading the other MUS team and progressed deep into the field. Congratulations to all of our current and former students in this Tennessee’s premier high school math contest.

Two of our students placed in the widely participated Fall Startup National Math Contest. This is significant considering the fact that they were competing with elite school students from CA, NJ, TX and other states. Richard Ouyang (MUS) placed 1st and Yunhua Zhao (MUS) placed 19th in the 12th grade division. Two other students from the Memphis area were also placed. They are Chang Yu (MUS) (9th in the 9th grade division) and Ohm Patel (White Station) (14th in the 10th grade division). Congratulations!
Rachel Fan and her eCYBERMISSION science team won the South-East regional (KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, and FL) of the 2014 eCYBERMISSION competitions! Each team member received $3000 savings bond. The team is heading to the national competition in Washington, DC, as one of the national finalists.
Richard Ouyang was recognized as an Academic
All-Stars in the General Scholarship

students in the region.
Another student associated with our school, Roger Li, was recognized as an Academic All-Stars in the General Scholarship category by The Commercial Appeal (http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/roger-li-collierville-high-school). We have an exceptional senior class. When I took the Principal job, they were 2nd graders. I have been excited seeing them going through our program. I look forward to seeing more students from our school on the list.
Our students did very well in the TMTA Math Contest 2014. Here is a list of our current or former students who placed top 10 in the statewide competition!

We also have quite a few students placed top 10 of the West Tennessee region. Congratulations to our award winning students! This is a great accomplishment.
Here is a list of our students who are National Merit Semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students will join around 16,000 other students, representing less than 1% of the U.S. high school seniors, competing for 7,600 scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. Students were selected as Semifinalists by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Richard Ouyang (MUS), Yunhua Zhao (MUS), Austin Erwin (CHS), Roger Li (CHS), Guo Yu (WSHS), Kelly Yuan (WSHS), Yuxie Xiao (WSHS)

- Our students achieved the best results in PSAT than any local schools. We have one 240, two 237, a total of four 230+, and many made the National Merit Semifinalist cut. Through our SAT classes, most of our students made tremendous improvements on PSAT, including one student improved an unprecedented 38 points. Last year, our top 10th graders scored the best PSAT scores than 11th graders in other schools.
- Quite a few students achieved perfect scores on SAT and ACT. We have one student made perfect scores on SAT (including Essay), ACT (all categories) and PSAT on first high school tries. We have many students made perfect scores on SAT II and AP exams.
- Our younger students from the Middle School Competition Math class did very well in the recent AMC 8 contest. We have one 6th grader scored an impressive 19, better than any of his local peers.
- Our high school students continue to dominate math and other academic competitions. We have more TMTA, AMC and AIMI top finishes than any local schools. We also have best showings at Latin and Chemistry competitions.
- We promote a well-rounded education. Majority of local elite Chinese swimmers are from our school. Wish them well in the upcoming county and state championships!
- Our students are also exceling in Knowledge Bowl, Arts and Music.
- We have 30+ students now on the HyVolt team, developing leadership skills, accumulating service hours and earning their 1st paychecks. I have received many positive comments on their wonderful services from the church and the community.

2012 American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) Qualifiers
Congratulations to Kevin Sun, Richard Ouyang and Yunhua Zhao for qualifying for the highly selective American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) through scoring high on the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) test 10A. Richard placed 1st in Tennessee and is the only Tennessee student on AMC 10A’s Distinguished Honor Roll (top1 %). Richard and Yunhua led the MUS team winning state’s 1st place team title. Our students demonstrated again and again that if we compete academically as an independent school, we would be a powerhouse in Tennessee. Keep up the good work!
2012 State High School Swim Championships Qualifiers
Susana Hamsley, Austin Erwin, Richard OuYang, Kevin Sun and April Erwin made cut times to compete in the State High School Swim Championships on 2/10-11 in Nashville. They also contributed points to their schools' outstanding performance at the County High School Swim Championships.
2011 Pro2Serv State Winners
Approximately 680 of the state’s best high school math students competed in the 2011 Pro2Serve competition held on the campus of University of Tennessee Knoxville in October. Kevin Sun (sophomore) and Richard OuYang (freshman) placed in the top ten, thereby naming them state winners. Each of them received $16,000 scholarships from UTK.
2011 TMTA Math Contest State Winners
Congratulations to Kevin Sun, Yunhua Zhao and Richard Ouyang for their outstanding performances at the annual TMTA Math Contest. Kevin and Yunhua tied for the 1st place in Algebra II while Richard, last year’s state winner in Algebra I, placed 1st in Geometry. We also have several students placed top 10 in the West Tennessee Region. Being state winners in such an important contest is certainly a significant accomplishment for these students. The results also underscore the fact that our school is academically among the elite schools in Tennessee despite a smaller student headcount.

Richard and Yunhua also led their Memphis University School (MUS) team capturing the 1st place school award for the second consecutive year. Richard, Yunhua and two Nashville students will represent the State of Tennessee at the National Mathcounts competition in Washington, D.C. the first weekend in May. Stanley Xiang, a former student of our school, placed 7th in the competition.
Austin Erwin made to the final of the 100 Breast event at Eastern Age Group Sectionals on 3/10-13.
Victoria Ouyang won the 8 and Under Girls Highpoints Award at the Gabrielle Rose Classic on 1/14-16.

Kevin Sun, Collierville High, had a 2nd place finish in the 100 IM event at the Shelby County High School Swim Championship. Collierville High won the 1st overall team award.
At the Regional Mathcounts on 2/5/11, Richard Ouyang (1st place overall, 1st place in countdown) and Yunhua Zhao (2nd place overall) led the MUS team to the 1st place team finish for a second year. The MUS team will represent west Tennessee to compete in the State Mathcounts in Nashville on 3/19. Kelley Yuan and Andy Chung represented White Station Middle to win the 2nd place team award. Austin Erwin represented Schilling Farm Middle to win the 4th place team award.
American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)
Richard Ouyang achieved a first AMC 8 perfect score from Tennessee since 2006. In addition, Richard scored 136.5 (2nd among all Tenn. high school contestants) on AMC 10 which qualified him to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) contest. Richard also scored 99 (9th among all Tenn. high school contestants), unprecedented by an 8th grader, in AMC 12. This score as well qualified him to the AIME competition. "The uniqueness of Richard's performance is roughly comparable to the imaginary and unlikely scenario of one of our Lower Schoolers displaying the NBA skills necessary to start professionally at point guard. It just doesn't happen... or can it?" - Clay Smythe, MUS Lower School Principal
Ryan, our WuShu class substitute teacher, recently won gold, silver and bronze medals at a Hong Kong WuShu competition. Ryan is a student of Master Qishi Wu, who teaches the Taiji and WuShu classes at our school.
